    Description

    OHIO FARMERS INSURANCE
The Ohio Legislature chartered the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Medina County in 1848. Their first home was a room over the general store in LeRoy, Ohio (AKA Westfiled). The name was changed to Ohio Farmers Insurance Company in 1851. In 1971 the Westfield Companies name was adopted making items with the Ohio Farmers name very rare. The Westfield Companies are still doing business today.
    FIRE MARK
The fire mark is made of tin with a black painted surface and gold lettering. It measures
6 5/8" X 3 1/2". This mark is listed in the "Footprint of Assurance" (the Authoritative Source for Fire Marks) as
#175 on pages 68 & 69. The mark itself is circa 1920 and was be place by the front door to show that the property was insured by Ohio Farmers. It is in great condition as it was found un-issued, NOS (New Old Stock) in the Westfield Home office. This is an authentic fire mark from Ohio Farmers.
    BOOK
The Book is titled "History of Ohio Farmers Insurance Company"
by Willard Largent and George E. Condon
. It was published in 1985 by theWestfield Companies and is in excellent condition. The book has 274 pages covering the history of the company from 1848 until the publication of the book, complete with pictures and renderings from through out this time span. It has a cloth hard cover and measures
    10.1 x 8.2 x 0.8 inches.
The Fire Mark above is documented in this book on pages 64 and 65.
These two would make an excellent addition for any collector of firefighting or insurance company memorabilia, an agent/broker, and particularly, a Westfield Company employee or retiree.
American insurance company's fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
