    [Hot Tuna]
    Original 1971 Poster
Original 1971 poster from the American blues band formed in 1969 by guitarist/vocalist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady. The poster shows a smug-looking cat with the captions "What's that smell like fish oh baby? / HOT TUNA / first pull up, then pull down. electric recorded live on RCA records and tapes." Heavy toning, pin holes, edge wear, and one large water stain; overall good. 10 x 15.25 inches (25 x 39 cm), framed to an overall size of 15 x 19 inches (38 x 48 cm).
From the collection of the legendary Boston jazz promoter Fred Taylor (1930-2019), known for booking jazz clubs Paul's Mall and Jazz Workshop in the 1960's–70's. The musicians he invited to Boston included many greats of the era, such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Muddy Waters, and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as young performers Bruce Springstein, Billy Joel, and Earth, Wind and Fire. He was the first to book the young Bob Dylan to play in Boston, and also staged Miles Davis' comeback show in 1981. The Music Museum of New England writes: "If you are a jazz musician who’s played in Boston anytime over the past half-century, it’s a good bet you got the gig because of Fred Taylor."
Hot Tuna began as a side project to Jefferson Airplane, intended to mark time while Grace Slick recovered from throat node surgery that had left her unable to perform. The band's name came from someone Jorma Kaukonen referred to as a "witty wag" who called out, "hot tuna" after hearing the line 'What's that smell like fish, oh baby,' from the song "Keep On Truckin'."
