Description
NEW CASTLE MUTUAL INSURANCEIn 1849, the New Castle County Mutual Insurance Company was chartered in Delaware. They began business in Wilmington, where they issued their first policy in 1850. Later they changed their name to New Castle Mutual Insurance Company. Their fire mark had the image of a Philadelphia Style Hand Operated Fire Pumper on it.
It measured 8 7/8" X 6 7/8" and was of heavy cast iron construction.
The plaque/mark in this listing is
of cast metal (non-ferrous) construction. It measures 8.75" x 6.5" and was cast by John Wright. The mark
has a good painted surface, black in color with silver letters and a red pumper, with only minor chips and nicks. This mark is rare and not one of the ones that is regularly seen up for sale
. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of fire marks, insurance memorabilia, or a great gift for a firefighter or insurance agent/underwriter.
American insurance company’s fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not suffer greatly if the building was destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
