This is a 5 strand coral and freshwater cultured pearl necklace.The necklace is about 18 1/2" long untwisted and is about 17" long twisted.
Coral is a polyp that live on the exoskeletons of their ancestors and form reefs. There are many different species of coral and they range in color from white, orange, pink, blue, red and black. Sometimes coral is dyed. There are soft and stony corals. Soft corals don't build reefs and are plant like. Stony coral has an exoskeleton of calcium carbonate. and build reefs. Coral reefs are found in the oceans around the world. The largest reef being the Great Barrier Reef.
CARE OF CORAL
Coral is soft and it has a hardness of 3.5 on the Mohr Scale.
Clean with a soft clean cloth and rinse in warm soapy water. The soap must not contain chemicals. Never soak coral. Never clean with chemicals, jewelry cleaner or a ultrasonic cleaner. Never swim or shower with coral jewelry. Remove jewelry before doing household chores, and put on jewelry after applying make-up, perfume and hairspray. Store separately in fabric pouch or wrap in tissue paper to prevent scratching.
Jewelry styles come and go, but pearl jewelry is timeless. Freshwater cultured pears are created by mussels and are mostly farmed in China. The mussels are mostly nucleated, but a newer method of a bead being introduced is being used in order for bigger sized pearls to be produced. The pearls are available in several colors from white, cream, pink, orange and pastal colors. which can be due to natural cultivation, or they can be treated for many different colors. Pearls come in various shapes such as round, oval, coin, button, baroque, stick, potato, square and rice. Pearls are organic and are composed of calcium carbonate and require proper care.
CARE
Store pearls in a velvet or soft material drawstring bag. Close clasps to prevent scratching the pearls. Store away from other jewelry to prevent scratching. Don't store in a plastic bag. Don't hang pearls it could cause stretching. Store flat. Don't store in sunlight or near heat.
Put pearls on after apply cosmetics, hairspray and perfume. Don't wear when doing housework, playing sport, bathing or swimming. Avoid contact with vinegar, fruit juice and detergents..
Don't use harsh chemicals and acid. Don't use an ultrasonic cleaner or jewelry cleaner. Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to remove perspiration. If using water use only distilled water and dab with a soft cloth and wipe dry. Tap water contains chlorine which is not good for pearls. Don't clean with a brush. Don't stretch pearls when cleaning.
